After Inman Connect chat, Troy Palmquist lands big role with eXp

Daniel Houston • OCT 05 2023 Inman

When indie broker and Inman contributor Troy Palmquist joined eXp Realty Chief Growth Officer Michael Valdes on stage in August at the Inman Connect real estate conference in Las Vegas, it was billed as a frank conversation about recruiting and retaining talent in the brokerage world. Little did Palmquist know, he was being recruited himself.

Palmquist has joined eXp as the company’s director of growth for the state of California, he announced Wednesday on a phone call with Inman. He’s also moving his 30-member team at Doora Properties over to eXp from Side, which had previously powered his brokerage’s operations.

SoCal teamerage DOORA Properties joins eXp

The No. 1 brokerage in the country by transaction side count is getting bigger. Troy Palmquist is bringing his team of nearly 30-agents at DOORA Properties over to eXp Realty from white-label firm Side.

“Joining a new brokerage company can be both an exhilarating and nerve-wracking experience, but, it’s precisely this sense of venturing into the unknown that I’m excited about. Our skills, commitment to growth, and eagerness to embrace fresh opportunities and carry them into a new environment bring with them the promise of greater success and professional fulfillment for me, my DOORA agents, and eXp,” Palmquist said in a statement.

How to 'attract' agents instead of 'recruiting' them

Lillian Dickerson • Aug 09 2023 Inman

Agent recruiting and retention is one of those evergreen topics that brokerages return to again and again to consider how to improve upon them.

But what if the word “recruiting” itself is setting brokers up for failure?

“I actually hate the word ‘recruiting,'” Michael Valdes, of eXp Realty, told the audience at Inman Connect Las Vegas on Wednesday. It was during a session that also included moderator Kymber Menkiti, of Keller Williams Capital Properties; and Troy Palmquist, of Doora Properties.

The Address founder opens indie brokerage amid Corcoran Global Living sale

Ben Verde • Jan 20 2022 Inman

The founder of indie brokerage The Address is leaving the agency he founded to focus fully on a new venture.

Troy Palmquist, the Ventura, California-based broker and Inman contributor who founded The Address in 2017, stayed on as its broker of record when it was sold in 2018.

The Address was sold to Corcoran Global Living in a deal announced last week that saw the agency’s five Southern California offices in Agoura Hills, Newport Beach, Oxnard, Malibu and Long Beach, along with its roughly 80 agents fall under the Corcoran Global Living banner.

The California broker seeking the perfect work-life balance

Inman • Jan 30 2020 Inman

6 a.m. Every day I make the bed. A couple of years ago I saw a video of the University of Texas at Austin’s 2014 Commencement Address where Admiral William H. McRaven said, “If you want to change the world, start by making your bed.” It’s the first thing I do every morning, even before I’ve had my coffee. This one task accomplished leads to the next task; starting off the day right sets you up for success.

6:30 a.m. Almost every morning begins with coffee with my two-year-old son, Rhett — a great way to start my day. Most days we go to The Coffee Bean, but sometimes we walk the block to the ocean to collect seashells.

Broker Spotlight: Troy Palmquist, Doora Properties

How did you choose your brokerage?

I decided to start my own brokerage because I didn’t find a fit locally for me. I felt that there was something lacking in the offerings from the big box brokerages, whether it was support services, technology or other elements.

What do you wish more people knew about working in real estate?

Real estate is a relationship-based business, whether it’s the agent to the customer or the brokerage to their customer, which is ultimately the real estate agent.

Two indie luxury brokerages team up in Southern California

Marian McPherson • Aug 30 2019 Inman

Independent luxury brokerage The Address announced Friday a joint partnership with 4 Malibu, a 14-agent luxury real estate team that specializes in residential and commercial sales alongside leasing, property management, design and development.

“We are not in the business of brokerage shopping, but when we find alignment that makes sense, we reach out to see if we can provide more to the market as a team versus separate entities,” said The Address founder Troy Palmquist in a prepared statement. “That is what we found with 4 Malibu.”

Next address for The Address? Long Beach

Matthew Blake • NOV 12 2019 Inman

The Ventura-based brokerage is putting the finishing touches on a 10,000-square-foot corporate headquarters set to open in Agoura Hills next month. And Troy Palmquist, founder of the firm, said that Andy Dane Carter will be its first agent at the Long Beach outpost.

Carter, the host of an eponymous podcast who has amassed a notable Instagram following, was formerly an independent agent in Long Beach. He said he will be the first of 10 to 12 hires based out of Long Beach.
